Feadship Predator

Arguably one of the most talked-about megayachts to debut this year, the nearly 73-meter (240-foot) Predator is unlike anything to ever emerge from Feadship's Royal De Vries shipyard. Not only is she the first Feadship with an axe bow, but she also has the tallest engine room (nearly 14 feet in spots, and equipped with four powerplants, no less), the longest uninterrupted interior views, and the deepest draft (just over 12 feet). She even has two custom tenders, one of which is in the photo above and mimics her lines. This tender was designed by a clever employee of De Voogt Naval Architects, which created the axe bow for the mothership. In sum, Predator is an interesting mix of high tech and aesthetics.
Take the axe bow, for example. Besides lending Predator a sleek and speedy air, it's designed for motion comfort and to sustain speeds in rough seas. And clearly it works: Capt. Greg Drewes, a 30-year veteran of running all sorts of craft, including four Feadships, says, "The yacht handles better than any I've ever sailed." He and the crew have even encountered five-meter (16-foot) seas, "and Predator throws no bow wake." He goes on to add, "There is no pounding, and in smaller seas up to four meters, she is as smooth as a flat sea. The lack of vertical movement makes Predator amazingly comfortable. There is no splash, no rise, and no fall." The yacht is capable of 28 knots and higher with all four MTU engines kicking in, a total of more than 23,000 hp.
As for the rest of her aesthetics, Predator features extensive use of Karelian birch, a light-tone wood, at the request of the owner. Bannenberg Designs decided to additionally employ accents of Macassar ebony and Zebrano, both lending darker contrasts. All of the woods appear in the split-level owner's stateroom and the six (yes, just six) guest staterooms as well as common gathering areas like the main saloon and bridge-deck lounge. Another highlight of the owner's suite: a hydraulically opening skylight directly above the bed, featuring concentric panels and mirrored by an elliptical design in the carpet below.

Baia One Hundred

On last November 15th in the beautiful context of Naples, the CEO Antonio Capasso and Roy Capasso marketing director of Cantieri di Baia showed to an exclusive parterre of international customers and media the newest Baia ONE HUNDRED. This superyacht will be come the new flagship of the just considerable fleet: a maxi open of 31 meters of length and 7,34 of beam. The boat is a feather in Baia’ s cap and also for all Neapolitan nautical industry. In fact this is the first super yacht built in Campania by a Neapolitan shipyard. Cantieri di Baia is very proud to invest in one’s territory carrying out a total quality product completely made in Naples with a wallet for 24 millions of euro and in according with this policy Cantieri di Baia decided to show the boat for the first time in own territory. This project was conceived to show the evolution of Baia’ s classical line, traditionally characterized by fast “Open Cruiser” models that combined a strong sports nature with internal and external layouts made to guarantee top comfort. The keel still features its peculiar shapes that favor propulsion with surface propellers coupled to Arneson Drive systems, whilst maintaining easy handling and efficient performance even in rough sea. The principle behind this open yacht, totally living and accessible, with no boundaries between the stern and the bow, has been extremely pushed in this project signed by Carlo Galeazzi for the design, Alberto Ascenzi for the engineering and Cantieri di Baia for the concept. ONE-HUNDRED has a main deck, which is completely free and accessible: transit from stern to bow is direct. The doors on all four sides of the deckhouse (including the stern) make this area seem even more spacious also thanks to the broad windows. The brightness is another plus of this project, thanks to the windows on the hull and the deck house structure, covered by a crystal surface, in complete harmony with the open yacht concept. The very slim windshield, frequent solution of Baia’s range, leaves much more spaces at the bow to create a dining/living area . At stern as well there’s a wide second living area nearly covered by the hard top equipped with spacious sofas, a lot of seats, a dining table and a central mobile with a large flat screen television. Forward we find three comfortable seats for the pilot and the two co - pilot. The captain gets a very comprehensive helm with excellent all - round visibility. Astern is obtained a big crew space with two double cabin and two berths with private bath nearly the galley set up for big dinners. forward there is the owner’s suite full beam , the two guest cabins and one vip cabin every each one with a private bath en suite, ça va sans dire. In order to guarantee high performance to 80 t of displacement have been foreseen 2 x MTU engine 2430 Hp with Arneson drive transmission, and with the optional engine 3 x MTU engine 2430 Hp with Arneson drive as well. It’ s also possible having 2 engine MTU 12v 4000m93 3510 hp. The top speed is of 50 knots.
Open Sesame
The concept of indoor/outdoor yachting takes a large step forward with the Baia One-Hundred. First, the bow and stern connect via large side walkways to provide unfettered access to the dual lavish al fresco spaces. The living/dining area forward was made possible by the use of an extremely slender windshield that resulted in the well utilized extra space. Then to complete the yacht’s transformation the interior spaces can be opened to the bow via an inventive aperture. The salon connects to the aft deck with a clever foldaway door for virtually limitless access to the main deck. The innovations aren’t only above the waterline. The well-engineered keel is crafted for surface propulsion mated with Arneson drives for a top-notch rough water ride. The hefty displacement was combined with a small keel for a yacht that grips the water, allowing for the use of a slightly flatter bottom, which results in more interior volume. These enhancements also lead to less resistance and better performance over 35 knots.

WALLY SAUDADE

Saudade made her first appearance at the Monaco Yacht Show, where she was one of the stars. The new 148-foot (45-meter) sloop is the largest Wally built so far, and is a traditional blue-water yet high performance mega yacht, developed from the hull lines of the breakthrough Esense.
The medium-light displacement (150 tons – 308,647 lbs) combined with the lifting keel (from 4.20 to 6.20 meters - 13’ 9” to 20’ 4”) produces a fast yacht with large volumes and full equipments for extensive round the world cruising.
The sail plan includes the 110 per cent jib trimmed through Magic Trims, while the rigging is in PBO. The furling boom simplifies the handling of the big mainsail. The long-distance equipment includes very large water tanks for a capacity of 3,000 l – 793 US gal on each side of the yacht, that can be used as water ballast to further increase the performance.
The deck is characterised by the low and aggressive pilothouse, and a rigid removable bimini is developed as an extension of the deck house. The wide cockpit door giving access to the main saloon enhances the inside-outside living concept typical of Wally, while flooding the interiors with natural light along with the large windows of the deckhouse. The interior layout provides for the guest quarter aft with the master suite, the master office, and two double guest cabins, for the raised saloon amidships with 360 degree view, and for the crew quarter and service area forward. The simple yet stylish interior decoration follows the owner’s brief to have a homey and comfortable feeling.
The Wally Research & Development conducted an extensive study on the sound and vibration insulation of the large engine room to obtain a very low noise and vibration levels, only 48 decibel in the main salon and the guest cabins. Two tenders can be stored onboard Saudade: one forward in the recessed garage, and one aft in the stern.

Oceanco Dilbar

On last 30 January "Dilbar", a 66' motor yacht designed in conjunction with the Interior Designer Alberto Pinto, was launched at the Dutch Oceanco yard. "Dilbar", built to the strict Lloyd's and MCA Registers' requirements, has steel hull and aluminium superstructures recalling the Dutch yard's classic style, while interior by Alberto Pinto is intentional modern, sporty - designed and features comfortable accommodation for 14 guests and 22 crew members. The guests have huge and well - lighted areas either on the main deck or on the lower one while the crew's quarter runs along the lower deck. On board there are two owner's suites, a Vip cabin, two single cabins and two double cabins for guests. The crew's quarter features a captain's cabin, an engineer's cabin, eight double cabins and a cabin with four berths. As far as the safety is concerned "Dilbar" was built not only to accord with the strict Rules of the two international Registers mentioned above, but also to feature a giant garage for three tenders plus a stowage area on the main deck right made for two MCA lifeboats. According to what the Dutch yard has officially declared, the standard engines provide a maximum speed of 16 knots and a cruising speed that allows cruising range making for long crossing in full comfort and safety; all this is enough adequate to suit the vessel's potential. With regard to the layout, this is modern - designed with sharp but at the same time harmonious lines in which wide and fine - lined windows give the whole a pleasant and original look.

Amels 225' LADY ANNE

This dramatic yacht is a fine example of how "spiritual accord" among a designer, furniture experts, the shipyard, and the clients can create a classic home afloat that is also a glowing reference to fine-art history.
But this bulbous-bowed masterpiece is also equipped for world cruising with total environmental protection in mind, including a zero-discharge cooling system and saltwater-fed sanitary system, refrigeration, and air-conditioning to meet IMO 2007 emissions standards.

Feadship Anna

Motoryacht Anna is the largest yacht in terms of volume ever built by the Koninklijke De Vries yard in Aalsmeer, the Netherlands.
After her initial private launch in Aalsmeer in January, Anna was moved to Feadship’s facility in Makkum for finishing. At the time only limited information was released so that the De Vries team in Makkum could ensure that this elegant lady was properly dressed. Now that this process has been completed, Feadship is delighted to present Anna to her expectant public.

Codecasa Main

The latest jewell from boat builders Codecasa, in Viareggio, Tuscany, has been revealed. Called Main, it’s the latest yacht for Giorgio Armani - 65 metres long it’s a peculiar choice of military colours and will substitute the older “Mariù” at 51 metres, also made by Codecasa.
The new yacht took three years to build, and the external design was created by Armani and the designers from the boat builders. The famous stylist also created the interior, personally following the works with collaboration from Studio Ortelli, and its trusted architects. Main is an Armani megayacht through and through, with a courageous style.

Apparently for this floating villa, Armani wanted the militar green to stand out, ribelling against the classic white of luxury yachts. The interior has much natural light, filtered by Ventian blinds in birchwood. Furnishings are in a minimalist style with black, steel and teak colours and materials.
Main holds six guest cabins, a recreational space and eight cabins for crew. It’s equipped with two Caterpillars at 2482 hp, both reaching a maximum speed of seven knots.

Silver

Espen Oeino designed Silver to meet specific performance and environmentally conscious goals of the vessel's owner. At 73.3 metres, her semi-displacement hull creates a highly efficient and stabile sailing platform. Powered by two 16V-4000 MTU engines, Silver effortlessly tops 25 knots and achieves transatlantic distances at 18 knots. The vessel's shallow draft provides for a highly responsive helm and allows the boat to explore areas off limits to nearly all other vessels in her class.Silver's slender lines and sleek profile depart from a ‘higher and wider’ trend in modern yacht design. The overall effect is an elegantly understated yet modern shape.
Interior styling is “Contemporary Italian” with extensive use of advanced lightweight materials. This very minimal and modern design creates gathering spaces that are warm, comfortable, and casually stylish – the perfect backdrop for entertaining and enjoying the company of family and friends.Built to SOLAS passenger ship Classification, Silver is engineered for safety and reliability. Her owners insist that a boat is to be sailed and all equipment has been selected to meet the most stringent operational demands.

SIGMA

It's an immense frustration that some of the most significant and advanced engineering feats on the planet are shrouded in secrecy and we can't all wonder at the design solutions employed. Such is the case with many mega-yachts - the US$200+ million toys of the mega-rich - and the spectacular Sigma mega-yacht designed by Phillipe Starck is a case in point. To be constructed by the elite Blohm + Voss ship-building facilities, the only details of the yacht available are the 118 metre length and the accompanying computer-generated illustration.
The Mega Yacht, going by the Blohm + Voss project name SIGMA, has been assigned the construction number 970 and will also be delivered in 2007. No-one knows who has commissioned the building, or the price, or any details of what lies under the distinctive profile.
The 118 m yacht will be constructed under the supervision of Blue Ocean Yacht Management under the lead of Neil Wade. As with any other yacht contract of Blohm + Voss, further details of the contract will be kept strictly confidential.
The interesting aspect about the design is its distinctive military-look and its similarity to the US Navy's upcoming US$100 billion stealth combat ship project code-named DD(X).
Gizmag has already covered one of the members of the DD(X) family in the littoral combat ship (LCS) and the larger DD(X) will be a multi-mission destroyer featuring advanced composite construction and some of the most advanced gun systems ever conceived for a ship.
There are two Advanced Gun Systems (AGSs) with 155mm bore that can fire an array of short- and long-range munitions, and an Advanced Vertical Launch System (AVLS) with 80 cells. The 80 cells will include any mixture of Tomahawk Land Attack Missiles, Standard Missiles (SM2-MR), Evolved Seasparrow Missiles, and Vertical Launch Anti-Submarine Rockets to counter any threat from under the water through to over the horizon.
We seriously doubt that Phillipe Starck has included any of the above in his design - the standard fare for a super-yacht includes swimming pools, helicopter landing facilities and spectacular lounges where guests can enjoy the spectacular views. As with George W Bush's new Cadillac One, we can only guess at what's contained, or what trickery might be employed to offer the spectacular views given that the SIGMA doesn't exactly have a lot of windows. Mega-wealthy people who build US$200 million yachts usually do have a significant entourage but the interesting aspect is that no names have even been rumoured to be associated with the yacht.
Secrecy seems to be one of those things that surrounds most megayachts. The world's largest superyacht is owned by Oracle Software founder and sailing enthusiast Larry Ellison. "Rising Sun" is 138 metres long and not much more is known than that - anybody who knows anything about it has been required to sign a confidentialty agreement.
It was apparently made larger than its original 120 metre length so it would be bigger than Microsoft founder Paul Allen's superyacht "Octopus". Allen might not care that much - Octopus is the second largest superyacht in America and he also owns the fourth largest (Tatoosh) and the 17th largest (Meduse) according to this excellent article at Powerandmotoryacht.com entitled "America's 100 largest yachts."

CRN GiVi

LULWORTH

When trying to describe the majesty that is Lulworth, one tends to run out of superlatives. The dimensions of the rig are staggering, as is the meticulous attention to detail that defines this restoration. No effort has been spared to trace original material, or reproduce items with the greatest possible degree of authenticity. This project has rightly been called “The Restoration of the Century” but Lulworth is also more than that - she is the greatest surviving member of the big class; the largest Gaff Cutter in the world; has the longest wooden boom in the world; has the most original and authentic interior of any large Classic; she is the ultimate in which to take part in the Classic regattas circuit; she is, within limits, a comfortable cruising yacht; she is supremely beautiful. Anyone considering the purchase of a large vintage yacht must give consideration to Lulworth.
